Ameland - It Amelân
The flag of the island of Ameland has four horizontal stripes, alternating blue and yellow; in the centre of the blue bars is a white inverted crescent, a reminder of the crusades; in the centre of the yellow bars are three black diagonal bars, representing the three villages Nes, Hollum and Ballum. The flag was adopted on 27 June 1950, but the design is much older, going back to the 18th century.
